Charleston and Fairmont State Set for Women’s Tennis Championship

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The 2026 MEC Women’s Tennis Championship matchup is set as No. 1 Charleston will battle No. 2 Fairmont State for the title on Sunday, May 3rd at 3:30 p.m. in Charleston, West Virginia.
 
#1 Charleston def. #4 Frostburg State, 4-0
 
The University of Charleston defeated No. 4 Frostburg State, 4-0, in the 2026 MEC Women’s Tennis semifinal number one as they advance to the Championship.
 
The doubles point would be back and forth however UC would come away with the point. UC’s Sara Martinez and Sofia Krasikova would defeat Frostburg’s Julia Ramos Bentham and Alyssa Kush. Then the Bobcats team of Patricia Castejon and Ximena Ku would beat UC’s Viloa Hirzberger and Vanessa Mueller. It would come down to the number three doubles and UC would be victorious as Riva Hondiashvilli and Michelle Connor defeated Claudia Coombes and Ella Troxell.
 
In singles action, UC Sara Martinez, the MEC Women’s Player of the Year, would win 6-0 but then Frostburg’s Julia Ramos Bentham would not be able to continue due to an injury as the Golden Eagles went up, 2-0.
 
Riva Hondiashvill would beat Ella Troxell for the Golden Eagles third point in number five singles, 6-0 and 6-1. Then UC would finish it off as Michelle Conor would beat Alyssa Kush, 6-1 and 6-2 as the Golden Eagles advanced to the title match.
 
UC will take on No. at 3:30 p.m. in Charleston, West Virginia for the title.
 
#2 Fairmont State def. #3 West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-3
 
Fairmont State would hold on and pull out a 4-3 victory over No. 3 West Virginia Wesleyan in the MEC Women’s Tournament semifinals as they advance the championship match against the University of Charleston Sunday, May 3rd.
 
Fairmont State would win the doubles point as Hope Backx and Lara Smith would defeat Dominique Jansen Van Vuuren, 6-0, and Maria Fonseca and Stephanie Gopar would beat Andrea martinez-Garrido and Emilie Bergmann, 6-3.
 
Then the Falcons would go up 2-0 after getting another point as Hope Backx defeated Daria Godlewska, 6-3 and 6-4. However, the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan would come right back and tie it up at 2-2 after Yuko Sakuria and Renata Pozzobon both secured wins.
 
Fairmont State then went back up one, 3-2, as Laura Maciel defeated Sneha Sundaraneedi, 6-4 and 7-5 as the final point would come down to the number six singles.
 
The Falcons would pull out the win as Emilie Bergmann defeated Alara Juelide Akgul in three, falling in the first 3-6, but then winning 6-1 and 6-3.
 
Fairmont State, the No. 2 seed, will now take on the No. 1 seed Charleston at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
