Charleston Season Ends as they Fall to Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The University of Charleston men’s basketball season came to an end on Saturday inside the Highmark Events Center. The Golden Eagles fell to the host and No. 1 seed Gannon Golden Knight, 83-59, in the third matchup of the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
 
Gannon jumped out to a fast start as they took a 16-point halftime lead over UC, 44-28.
 
Charleston scored the first two points of the half on a Thomas Hailey layup and then immediately forced a turnover which UC converted into another two-points on a Matthew Shelton dunk.
 
Gannon responded with a three-pointer, but Charleston responded with another bucket, trailing 47-34. The Golden Eagles began to struggle to maintain possession, turning the ball over and allowing Gannon to extend their lead 62-38 with just under 11 minutes left in the contest. The Golden Eagles then went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit but Gannon hit a three right before the media timeout, leading 67-47 with 8:14 left to play.
 
Gannon continued to build their lead, ahead 78-50 with under five minutes left in the game. The Golden Eagles could not overcome the deficit, falling to the Golden Knights 83-58.
 
Braden Chapman scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Matthew Shelton 11 points.
 
UC shot 38 percent from the floor and 24 percent from deep while Gannon shot 44 percent from the floor and 33 percent from behind the arc.
 
Gannon outscored Charleston in the paint 40-28. Gannon’s bench scored 43 points while the Golden Eagles bench had 13 points.
 
Pace Prosser scored 16 points to go along with three assists, and three steals. Layne Sarver chipped in with 15 points.
