Conference Play Starts for MEC Teams

• Eight of nine Mountain East Conference teams are in action again this week as conference play continues.
• Three of the four game are slated for Saturday at 1 p.m, while WV Wesleyan will host Frostburg State at 7 p.m.
• With Wheeling defeating Fairmont State last Saturday, 35-28, Frostburg State is now the lone unbeaten team in the MEC.
• Wheeling is the only MEC team idle this week.

Notable

• Streaking: University of Charleston and Glenville State have conference win streaks intact. UC has won 13 consecutive games in Mountain East Conference competition, and Glenville State has won five consecutive MEC games after finishing the 2024 season on a hot streak.

• Frostburg State has scored 40-plus points in two of the first three games of the season. Since joining the MEC for the 2019 campaign, the Bobcats are 21-0 when scoring 40 or more points.

• Frostburg State is the MEC’s lone remaining unbeaten team.

• Of the teams with two or more defensive touchdowns nationally, two of the 11 are from the MEC: Frostburg State and West Virginia State. The Bobcats are one of five teams that have both a fumble return and an interception return for a score.

• The top three rushing performances in the MEC this season are by a Falcons running back: two by Leonard Farrow, and one by LeJay Hatcher.

• QB versatility: Ean Hamric (UC) and Anthony Garrett (GSU) are the only two signal callers in the league who have passed for at least 700 yards and rushed for at least 100.

• Glenville State’s Brandon Penn leads the league in tackles per game (11.3).

• Of players with 200+ rushing yards in the MEC, West Virginia State’s Jojo Restall is second in average yards per carry at 6.7.

• The Yellow Jackets are tops in the MEC when it is time to convert on third down: 45.5 percent.

• (Almost) no team gets off the field on third down like the University of Charleston, which entered last week No. 1 nationally in third down defense but dropped one spot. Even so, the Golden Eagles allow a third down conversion on only 20.8 percent of chances.

• West Liberty QB Kohl Meisman has aired it out in 2025, leading the MEC in completions and attempts.

• Meisman’s top target, Trey Singleton, is a big play threat and is tied for the MEC lead in receptions (19) and third in yards (282).

• WLU’s Grant Thompson leads the MEC in tackles for a loss (7.0).

• Concord leads the MEC in passing yards per game, but the offensive philosophy has not led to more sacks. The Mountain Lions have allowed only two sacks in 2025, tied for the conference best.

• Anthony Garrett’s 404-yard outburst against Millersville is the top single-game performance in the MEC this season.

• The 93-yard link up between Wheeling quarterback Ade Olanegan and receiver Jordan Kaiser is the longest pass-and-catch in the MEC in the last two seasons.

• The Wheeling defense is putting up league-best numbers where it matters most, leading the league in sacks (10) and getting stingy when opponents get inside the red zone. The Cardinals’ opposition has advanced inside the 20 on 11 occassions, but have come away with a touchdown only six times.

• Two of the top eight D-II players nationally in total offense call the MEC home: Concord’s Tyler Mizzell (374.0 yards per game) and Glenville State’s Anthony Garrett (322.3 yards per game).
