BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Glenville State quarterback Anthony Garrett is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, the Pioneers’ Brandon Penn is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week, and Wheeling’s Brett Jackson is the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Garrett had an all-around standout performance in Glenville State’s 44-28 non-conference road win against Millersville. The signal caller finished 18 of 29 passing for 328 yards and added 76 yards on six carries. Garrett had a touchdown passing and rushing, and his 42-yard hurdle and run was a highlight in the Pioneers’ comeback victory.
Penn punctuated that road win with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in Saturday’s fourth quarter, but he contributed from wire-to-wire. The senior defensive back also recorded a career-high 15 tackles, blocked a field goal attempt, and helped on a tackle for a loss. Penn’s pick-6 came with 4:08 left in the game and put Glenville State ahead, 44-28.
Jackson led Wheeling’s special teams unit in a 35-31 win at Lake Erie. The sophomore punter averaged 39.0 yards on five punts, although his performance was highlighted by his ability to pin the opponent inside the 20-yard line. Three of Jackson’s five punts were downed inside the 20, including his long punt of 42 yards.
