BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference has announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Fairmont State running back Leonard Farrow was selected as the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, Frostburg State linebacker Carter Mazalewski was named the MEC Defensive Player of the Week, and Wheeling punter Carter Blake was named the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Farrow, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior from Mount Hope, West Virginia, had a career day in the Falcons’ 24-21 win against Seton Hill on Thursday. Farrow rushed 25 times for 274 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching a 32-yard touchdown pass out of the backfield. He led the team in rushing and receiving yards, and added a 26-yard kickoff return to finish the day with 332 all-purpose yards.
Farrow’s day on the ground ranks No. 10 in MEC history for a single game, and the fourth-best rushing performance in Fairmont State history.
Mazalewski, a 6-3, 240-pound sophomore from Mount Airy, Maryland, led the Bobcats in their season opening 41-27 win against Shepherd. Mazalewski recorded a team-high eight tackles, including a pair of sacks, and had a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown that gave Frostburg State (1-0, 0-0) a 20-3 lead with 3:27 left of the second quarter.
Blake, a 6-2 sophomore from Flushing, Ohio, was a key player on special teams for Wheeling. Blake booted five punts, three of which were downed inside the 20-yard line, and he had a 60-yard punt, the longest in the MEC in Week 0.
