Halling, Whitehill Shared MEC Wrestler of the Week Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Wrestler of the Week awards. The weekly awards are presented by The Health Plan.

Frostburg State’s Tanner Halling and Glenville State’s Colby Whitehill share the first MEC Wrestler of the Week honor this season. Both wrestlers were undefeated on the weekend and defeated a nationally ranked opponent.

Halling, a freshman from Rohrersville, Maryland, took first place in the 133-pound weight class at the Pioneer Open, recording five total victories. Halling defeated Millersville’s Nick Cottone, who entered the match at No. 11 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings. Halling had a pair of tech falls and won the championship bout, 14-3.

Whitehill, a senior from Brookeville, Pennsylvania, also went unbeaten at the Pioneer Open, winning the 285-pound weight class. He scored a team-best 28.0 points for the Pioneers, pinned three opponents and recorded a decision (2-0) and major (13-1). In the process, Whitehill defeated Ashland’s Wyatt Bailey, who entered at No. 9 in the NWCA rankings for the 285-pound weight class.
