BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
West Liberty quarterback Antevious Jackson is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Frostburg State linebacker Carter Mazalewski is the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. On special teams, Wheeling’s Conor Fitzpatrick took home the conference’s individual honors.
Jackson led West Liberty to a 47-41 win against West Virginia State, which included a 40-yard game-winning touchdown pass as time expired. Jackson accounted for five total touchdowns — four passing and one rushing — and completed 17 of 24 passes for 275 yards. He added 87 yards on the ground on 17 carries as the Hilltoppers scored 26 fourth quarter points to pull off the victory at home.
Mazalewski spearheaded Frostburg State’s defensive efforts against one of Division II’s most prolific offenses. In winning his second MEC Defensive Player of the Week award this season, Mazalewski recorded 10 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a sack in the 33-7 win against Concord. Mazalewski’s sack came on third down to force a punt, and his final tackle for a loss halted the Mountain Lions’ possession on fourth down.
Fitzpatrick became the fourth different Wheeling player to capture MEC Special Teams Player of the Week. In a 40-14 win against West Virginia Wesleyan, Fitzpatrick handled kickoff duties, made all five of his extra point attempts, and drilled a 48-yard field goal in the third quarter that is the longest of his career, and one yard shy of the Cardinals’ program record.
