MEC Football: Week 6 Preview

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Week 6 of the Division II college football season features four Mountain East Conference matchups as league play continues. The MEC boasts three undefeated teams, including Frostburg State, which cracked the AFCA Top 25 poll two weeks ago at No. 23, and climbed another two spots in this week's poll. In addition to Frostburg State, which has the No. 1 scoring offense and scoring defense in the MEC, the league has two other teams undefeated in league play: Charleston and Wheeling.

Notes: Glenville State has won two of three matchups since Frostburg State joined the MEC … the Bobcats, however, won last year’s meeting, 41-9 … the Pioneers enter Saturday’s matchup after picking up the team’s first conference win last weekend … Glenville State brings one of the MEC’s most prolific offenses into Bobcat Stadium to face the league’s stingiest defense … the Pioneers ranked No. 3 in the MEC in total offense, averaging 42.8.8 yards per game … Frostburg State leads the conference in scoring defense and total defense … the Bobcats are one of 12 remaining unbeatens in Division II … the Bobcats lead the MEC in scoring offense (38.4 points per game) and scoring defense (16.8 points per game), an average margin of victory of 21.6 points … Frostburg State moved up two spots in the AFCA Top 25 poll, climbing to No. 21 … the Bobcats started the season 3-0 for the fifth consecutive season, and are 5-0 for the third time in the last five seasons … a win against Glenville State will make Frostburg State 6-0 for the second straight year … the Bobcats are 18-3 prior to Oct. 1 in the last five seasons combined.

Notes: West Virginia State and Concord meet after each lost on the road last weekend … the Yellow Jackets have had control of the series, winning the last eight matchups against the Mountain Lions … in those matchups, the W.Va. State offense has scored at least 33 points in each victory, and averages 45.6 points per game in that span … the Yellow Jackets scored at least 40 points for the third consecutive game last weekend … WVSU is No. 2 in the MEC in scoring offense at 36.8 points per game … the Yellow Jackets’ offense is No. 1 in the MEC … State ranks in the top 10 nationally in a pair of offensive categories: total offense (No. 8) and yards per play (No. 7) … Concord tries to bounce back from a tough outing at Frostburg State … the Mountain Lions are undefeated at home this season … CU remains one of the MEC’s most potent offensive attacks, especially through the air … the Mountain Lions are No. 1 in the MEC in passing offense … Concord is also stingy against the pass defensively, ranking No. 2 in the conference this season.

Notes: Fairmont State has won seven consecutive meetings in the series … W.Va. Wesleyan’s last win against the Falcons came on Nov. 1, 2014, a 34-13 Bobcats win in Buckhannon … WVWC enters Saturday’s road game in search of its first win of 2025 … the Bobcats are on a 30-game losing streak overall, which dates back to Oct. 22, 2022 … Wesleyan opened the scoring in last weekend’s game at Wheeling with an 11-yard touchdown run, and then added a 40-yard interception return later in the first quarter, which was the seventh defensive score via a pick by an MEC team this season … Fairmont State is in search of its first MEC win in 2025 after being picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll … Good news: the Falcons got hot midseason in 2024, too, winning five of six to close the season … Fairmont State is 9-4 after Oct. 1 the last two seasons, including 4-1 in November … the Falcons are No. 3 in the MEC in scoring offense, No. 2 in total offense, and No. 1 in rushing offense … the Falcons’ ground game has been tough to stop, averaging a league-best 5.8 yards per attempt … Fairmont State has two of the top four rushing performances by an MEC team this season, gaining 293 yards against Glenville State and a league-best 337 yards vs. Bloomsburg … the Falcons also have three of the four longest runs of the season: 65, 62, and 55 yards.

Notes: The University of Charleston is back in action after an off week … the Golden Eagles travel to Bishop Schmitt Field in a clash of two of the three remaining MEC teams without a league loss … Charleston and Wheeling have met four times, with UC winning each meeting … UC has erased a halftime deficit in both of its conference victories … in the past two league games, the Golden Eagles have outscored the opposition 42-14 after intermission … Charleston is one of four MEC teams averaging at least 30 points per game … the Golden Eagles are No. 1 in the MEC in rush defense and No. 43 in Division II … Wheeling is 2-0 in conference play for the first time … the Cardinals are on a three-game winning streak overall, the first time that’s happened for the program since 2022 when Wheeling defeated Alderson Broaddus, Glenville State, and West Virginia Wesleyan in succession … the Cardinals owe their fortunes to a defense that is No. 3 in the MEC in scoring defense … Wheeling has also had four of the six MEC Special Teams Player of the Week award-winners this season … Ade Olanegan’s two interceptions thrown against W.Va. Wesleyan were the first of the season for him … Olanegan has been key to Wheeling’s hot streak with multiple touchdown passes in each of the three victories … the Cardinals are 3-0 when Olanegan throws at least two scoring passes, and 0-2 when he does not.

Conference Play Starts for MEC Teams

• Eight of nine Mountain East Conference teams are in action again this week.
• Three of the four games are slated for Saturday at 2 p.m., while play gets started with Glenville State at Frostburg State at 1 p.m.
• Frostburg State is still the lone unbeaten team in the MEC, while Charleston and Wheeling are perfect in league play.
• West Liberty is the only MEC team idle this week.

Notable

• Streaking: UC has won 14 consecutive games in Mountain East Conference competition.
• Frostburg State has scored 40 or more points in three of five games this season and allowed single digits in three of five games this season. Since joining the MEC for the 2019 campaign, the Bobcats are 22-0 when scoring 40 or more points.
• Of the teams with two or more defensive touchdowns nationally, two of the 31 are from the MEC: Frostburg State and West Virginia State. The Bobcats are one of 17 teams that have both a fumble return and an interception return for a score. Overall, MEC student-athletes have seven defensive touchdowns this season.
• Concord QB Tyler Mizzell ranks No. 6 in Division II in passing yards per game.
• West Virginia State receiver Amare Ary is No. 1 in Division II in receiving yards per game.
• The MEC boasts two of the top four receivers in Division II in receiving yards per game: Ary and Concord’s Dom Collins.
• After 94 yards combined in the first two weeks, Ary is averaging 174.3 receiving yards per game in WVSU’s last three contests.
• WVSU QB Kaleb Jackson generated 445 yards of total offense at West Liberty, the single best performance by an MEC player this season.
• The Yellow Jackets-Hilltoppers game featured two of the four top all-purpose performances in the MEC this season: WLU RB Hunter Patterson had 271 yards, while WVSU WR Amare Ary accounted for 236 yards.
• The MEC has had 14 games of 100-yard rushers this season, and 17 games of 100-yard receivers. West Liberty’s Hunter Patterson is the only one who eclipsed triple digits in rushing yards and receiving yards in the same game.
• Charleston enters this weekend’s action ranked No. 5 nationally in third down defense. Opposing offense are converting on third down only 24.6 percent of the time.
• Fairmont State specialist Emmanuel Richardson is continuing his pursuit of perfection. Richardson has not missed an extra point attempt in 109 career tries — the most makes and attempts by an MEC kicker without a miss in league history.
• Concord’s Dom Collins and Fairmont State’s Leonard Farrow are the only two MEC players averaging at least 150 all-purpose yards per game.
• West Liberty’s Morgan Williamson has had 10 punts downed inside the 20-yard line this season, three more than the next closest player.
• Wheeling’s Leonard Sherrod III and Concord’s Corey Radliff are tied for the league lead in interceptions with four.
• The 93-yard link up between Wheeling quarterback Ade Olanegan and receiver Jordan Kaiser is the longest pass-and-catch in the MEC in the last two seasons.
• West Virginia State averaged 8.9 yards per play against Fairmont State, the best single-game performance in the MEC this season.
