WHEELING, W.Va. – The top-seeded Charleston Golden Eagles took home their second Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship on Sunday evening with a 78-68 victory over second-seeded West Liberty at WesBanco Arena.
With the win, Charleston improved to 25-6 on the season and earned the MEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Atlantic Region Tournament.
Charleston shot 46 percent (11-24) from the field and made 24-of-28 free throw attempts in the second half to break open its two-point halftime lead (31-29).
Charleston led by as many as 18 points at the 3:49 mark of the second half.
Despite being outshot by the Hilltoppers (44.2%-to-39.3%), Charleston held a 40-30 advantage on the glass, including a 14-5 edge on the offensive boards. The Golden Eagles also had a 16-0 advantage in second-chance points and a 21-6 edge in fast break points.
The UC defense limited the Hilltoppers to just 6-of-22 from three. The Golden Eagles also forced 12 tunrovers and turned them in 17 points on the offensive end.
Charleston had four double-figure scorers, led by Dwaine Jones with 23 points and seven rebounds. DeAirius Barker recorded 19 points and four rebounds, while Tyler Eberhart recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Shunta Wilson finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
West Liberty was whistled for 31 fouls in the game, which resulted in a 32-of-39 performance from the charity stripe for UC.
West Liberty also had five double-figure scorers, led by Kyler D’Augustino with 15 points. Christian Montague and Alek West netted 11 points apiece.
Jones was named the 2024 Mountain East Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Eddie Colbert III and Tyler Eberhart, West Liberty’s John Korte and Zach Rasile, Fairmont State’s Zyon Dobbs, West Virginia State’s Anthony Pittman and Concord’s Kollin Tolbert.
Tolbert had the tournament’s highest scoring average at 20.0 points per game.
Charleston’s DeAirius Barker was honored as the Commissioner’s Heart & Hustle Award recipient.
