MEC Women's Soccer Honors for Gianinetto, Smith

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference has announced this week’s Women’s Soccer Players of the Week honorees. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.

Fairmont State midfielder Valentina Gianinetto is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week while Frostburg State defender Cat Smith is the MEC Defensive Player of the Week.

Gianinetto, a 5-5 freshman from Katy, Texas, had two goals and an assist to lead the Falcons to a pair of convincing wins. Gianinetto was credited with an assist on one of three second-half goals for Fairmont State in a 4-0 shutout of Salem (W.Va.) on Wednesday before hammering home the tying and winning goals in Sunday’s 3-1 win against Point Park (Pa.).

Smith, a 5-6 senior defender from Parsonsburg, Md., earned her third MEC Defensive Player of the Week honor by helping lead the Bobcats to two more MEC victories. She scored a goal and helped FSU limit Wheeling to just five shots on goal in a 4-1 win on Wednesday. Smith never left the field on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes as Frostburg State held West Liberty to just two shots on goal in a 3-0 shutout.
