West Virginia State Tops UC for First MEC Women's Soccer Title

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Sara Parìs Filter scored the decisive goal inside of the final two minutes to lift West Virginia State to its first Mountain East Conference women’s soccer championship, 2-1, over intra-city rival Charleston on Sunday afternoon at the Welch Athletic Complex.

Parìs Filter, the MEC Freshman of the Year, broke a 1-1 tie on an assist from Sandra Linares, triggering a massive celebration for the visitors. It was Linares who opened the scoring after a scoreless opening half, taking a pass from Naomi Njeri to give WVSU a 1-0 lead.

UC countered seven minutes later when Lina Jaime nailed a penalty kick.

Parìs Filter finished a counter-attack that she started and then found Linares racing up the right side of the pitch. Linares sent it back to Parìs Filter, who found the back of the net and raced toward the Yellow Jackets’ bench as her teammates erupted with joy.

Parìs Filter and Linares both made the MEC All-Tournament team, along with teammate and goalkeeper Laura Galindo, who made seven saves during Sunday’s final. Jaime and teammate Juliette Lucas were honored on the team for UC, as well as Fairmont State’s Braylyn Sparks and Frostburg State’s Cassidy Paige.
