UC, WVSU Post Semifinal Wins

The top two seeds will play for the 2019 MEC Women's Tennis Tournament title tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Brian David Fox Tennis Courts in Huntington, W.Va. 

The top-seeded Golden Eagles cruised to a 4-0 win over UVa-Wise, while West Virginia State dropped the doubles point against West Virginia Wesleyan, but scored convincing wins in singles to move on to the championship match. 

West Virginia State has won four of the first five MEC Tournament titles, while Charleston topped the Yellow Jackets for its only MEC Tournament crown. UC downed West Virginia State 5-2 back on April 22 in a match that saw several close battles. The two teams have played for the title in each of the last five seasons. 

Charleston 4, UVa-Wise 0 | Match Results
Charleston dispatched of UVa-Wise, 4-0, in the opening semifinal on Thursday morning. 

The Golden Eagles won at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure that point, and then the back half of the UC lineup worked quickly to secure the team victory. Regina Lopez-Saucedo gave UC their second point to put Charleston up 2-0 with a win at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Wise's Lillian Morris. Moments later, Mathlide Simon got the Golden Eagles one court away from clinching a spot in Saturday's final with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over the Cavs' Olivia Dishner. Securing the 4-0 win for UC was senior, Silvana Slusarciuc, at No. 4 singles over Montana Hill.  

West Virginia State 4, West Virginia Wesleyan 1 | Match Results
West Virginia State fell behind early by losing the doubles point, but then responded in singles to take the 4-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan and move on to the MEC Tournament fina.

Kiersten Hensley lost just one game in against Sai Sakamoto, 6-0, 6-1, to get WVSU started. Nika Tadic did the same at No. 6 singles to make it 2-1, and shortly after that Chante Malo blanked Rebecca Osborne, 6-0, 6-0, to make it 3-1 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. Laura Isbey secured the match at No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-1, in her match.
