UC, WVWC Move On To Men's Soccer Finals

The University of Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan will meet for the MEC Men's Soccer Tournament championship on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Schoenbaum Stadium. The Golden Eagles survived a penalty shootout against Notre Dame to advance to the finals, while the Bobcats posted a 3-0 win over Urbana.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.
-- After playing Notre Dame to a scoreless draw, the University of Charleston advanced to the MEC Tournament finals in penalties, 5-4. 

The first half was even with both teams dangerous on counter attacks, but UC had the better chances in the second 45 minutes. The Golden Eagles had four corners and five shots in the second half with two of those landing on frame. A pivotal moment came with under three moments left to play when Notre Dame was called for a foul in the box and UC was awarded a penalty kick. Will Roberts stepped to the spot, but his attempt was saved by Daniele De Angelis. 

After two 10 minute overtimes, the game moved to penalties to determine a winner. UC keeper Paulo Pita stopped the third shooter for NDC to give the Golden Eagles the edge, but De Angelis came up with another big save on what would have ended the game once again stopping a shot by Roberts. Pita came up with another stop on Notre Dame's six shooter, and then Gabriel Cabral buried his attempt to send UC on to the finals.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Second-seeded West Virginia Wesleyan scored three goals in the second half to defeat Urbana and advance to the MEC Tournament Finals on Sunday.

Despite a 10-1 advante in shots in the first half, Urbana could not find the back of the net and the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. West Virginia Wesleyan got on top of the game in the 54th minute after Matthew Bentley took a feed from Paul Smith and buried the shot to give the Bobcats the 1-0 lead. WVWC managed to control more of the game and doubled its lead in the 76th minute on a score as Smith this time put the ball on the back of the net off an assist from Guillermo Rueda. Urbana pressed to get back in the game and fired off five shots in the next 10 minutes, but West Virginia Wesleyan was able to put the game away in the waning minutes as Rueda assisted again on a Luca Falconieri goal in the 88th minute.

For the game, Urbana held the edge in shots, 19-10, but the Bobcats managed to put more on frame, 6-4, scoring on three of those six chances. WVWC keeper Cooper Zent was able to stop all three shots he faced after coming on to play the second half. 

Smith finished with a goal and an assist, while Rueda had two assists to lead West Virginia Wesleyan on offense. Thibaut Bourrier was able to get five shots off in the game for Urbana.
