UC, WVSU Win To Set Up Finals Rematch

HUNTINGTON, W.Va
. -- Top-seeded West Virginia State held off West Virginia Wesleyan, 5-4, and second-seeded Charleston rolled past West Liberty, 5-1, to advance to the finals of the MEC Women's Tennis Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets and Golden Eagles will meet in a rematch of last year's final that saw Charleston come away victorious, 5-4. The championship will begin at 11 a.m. at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center. 

WVSU needed to go the distance to defeat the Bobcats in the first semifinal. West Virginia Wesleyan won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the 2-1 lead.

In singles, the top three for WVSU in Laura Isbey, Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald came away with singles victories. WVWC got wins at No. 4 and No. 5 from Cecilia Martinez and Julia Yanes. The match came down to No. 6 singles where Nika Tadic won 6-4 and 6-0 to close things out for the Yellow Jackets. 

Charleston got off to a quick start with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, but West Liberty recorded a victory at No. 3. The Golden Eagles closed out the match with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 with wins from Kristine Gegeshidze, Elise Edwards and Silvana Slusarciuc.
