CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia State claimed its third-straight Mountain East Conference Tournament title by downing Charleston, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts.
Brittany Franco, the MEC Player of the Year, teamed with the league's Freshman of the Year Laura Isbey to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, to open the match. UC's tandem of Elise Edwards and Jackie Bakos evened things with a win at No. 2 doubles, but WVSU finished the the doubles portion with the 2-1 lead after Diana Cotoros and Brenda Cumpa won at No. 3 doubles.
Franco won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Cotoros rolled at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Isbey came up with the match-clinching win at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win.
