SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University football team claimed its first Mountain East Conference title over Shepherd 29-20 but not without some high, intense drama.
With Concord up 20-13 in the fourth quarter, Shepherd forced the Mountain Lions to punt with less than two minutes in regulation. Redshirt freshman punter
Garrett Lee pinned Shepherd inside its own 10, but the Rams drove the length of the field to tie the game 20-20 with 39 seconds remaining.
Concord was unable to score before the end of the game.
In overtime, junior kicker
Andy Ellington connected on a 24-yard field goal attempt. Once the Rams took over possession, they converted on a fourth down to keep the drive alive. However, facing another fourth down from the seven-yard line, SU elected to kick.
Sophomore defensive lineman
Darryl Johnson was able to block the kick as redshirt freshman defensive back
Jeremiah Johnson ran the kick back, securing Concord's first conference title since 2011.
Concord appears poised for a berth in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The NCAA selection show will be Sunday night at this link beginning at 5:00 p.m.
