MEC Football: Week 3 Preview

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The 2026 Mountain East Conference football season enters the first week of conference play with league matchups on September 17 and 19. 

Charleston and Concord will face off for the first time this season on Thursday, kicking off at 7 p.m. ET at Callaghan Stadium in Athens, West Virginia. Concord remains the only undefeated team in the MEC, with a 2-0 overall record.

On Saturday, Glenville State will face off against Division I Mercyhurst, marking the lone nonconference match up of the week. The Pioneers will travel to Erie, Pennsylvania with a start time at 1 p.m. 

The remainder for Saturday’s contests are slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff, with Frostburg State traveling to face off against West Liberty inside West Family Stadium in West Liberty, W. Va. Wheeling welcomes Fairmont State to Bishop Schmitt Field in Wheeling while West Virginia Wesleyan will travel to Institute, W. Va. to face off against West Virginia State.

Notes: Charleston enters the matchup with a 0-3 record, after falling 42-31 to North Greenville on Sept. 11 in Tigerville, South Carolina … the Golden Eagles finished with 410 yards of total offense, including 288 passing yards and 122 rushing yards against the Trailblazers … redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Frye completed 20 of 34 passes for 288 yards along with three touchdowns and an interception … Concord remains the only undefeated team in the MEC, after last week's bye week … Concord leads the conference in scoring offense, with 33.5 points per game and total offense with 433.0 average yards per game …  the Mountain Lions are receiving votes in the  AFCA Division II Coaches Poll.

Notes: Glenville State travels to Erie, Pa. to take on Division I Mercyhurst after a bye week last week … the Pioneers took down Millersville, 24-21 on Sept. 3 in Glenville, W. Va … Glenville State’s redshirt junior quarterback JD Sherrod threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-28 passing, good enough to be named the MEC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7 … on defense, redshirt freshman safety Knowel Smith had a 12-tackle performance and picked off a Millersville pass in the third quarter which earned him MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 7 … Mercyhurst enters the contest 0-3, dropping their last game to New Mexico, 70-7 on Sept. 12 in Albuquerque, New Mexico … the Lakers finished with 155 yards of total offense, compared to the Lobos 460 yards … Mercyhurst junior quarterback Anthony Wolter threw 9-for-20 with 111 yards and a touchdown.

Va. to face off against the Hilltoppers on Saturday, with an even record of 1-1 … the Bobcats took down Assumption, 24-19 on Sept. 12 in Frostburg, Maryland … Frostburg State tallied 347 yards of total offense, with 212 passing yards and 135 rushing yards … redshirt junior quarterback Jordan Brooks finished with 151 yards, going 12-for-31 with two touchdowns … wide receiver Ray Adames was named the MEC Special Teams Player of the Week after having a key punt block and recovery in Frostburg State's 24-19 victory over Assumption. With FSU leading 17-13 at the end of the third quarter … the Bobcats lead the MEC in total defense with 246.5 yards per game … West Liberty took down Post, 35-14 on Sept. 12 on the road in Waterbury, Connecticut … the Hilltoppers totaled 419 yards of total offense with 257 rushing yards and 162 passing yards … senior quarterback Kohl Meisman threw for 120 yards, going 13-for-17 with a touchdown … senior running back Hunter Patterson was named the MEC Offensive Player of Week on Sept. 14 after tallying 26 carries, 191 yards and four rushing touchdowns, additionally Patterson connected on a seven-yard pass, scoring his fifth touchdown of the game … Patterson leads the Mountain East in three statistical categories, including 184.0 average rushing yards, 20.0 points and 237.3 all-purpose yards per game … the Hilltoppers lead the MEC with 233.0 rushing yards per game.

Notes: Fairmont State enters the contest 0-3, after falling 371-7 to Findlay on Sept. 12 … the Falcons tallied 232 yards of total offense, with 135 passing yards … redshirt freshman quarterback Deven Sisler finished 16-for-29 with 135 yards and two touchdown passes … Wheeling fell to Lake Erie on Sept. 12, 23-7 in Wheeling … the Cardinals finished with 265 yards of total offense with 213 passing yards … redshirt quarterback Landon Lutz threw for 213 yards, going 26-for-42 with a passing touchdown … Lutz had his third straight game that eclipsed the 200-yard passing mark, averaging 174.5 yards per game … outside linebacker Jalen Higginbotham was named the MEC Defensive Player of the Week after setting a career high with 15 total tackles and one tackle for a loss.
