FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State rallied from a halftime deficit, broke a tie in the fourth, and then held on to defeat Dominican University of California, 13-11, in the Mountain East Conference Women’s Championship final Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Frostburg State secured the MEC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse tournament. The 24-team single elimination bracket was unveiled Sunday night, and the Bobcats enter as a No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Region.
Frostburg State will face No. 3 East Stroudsburg on Thursday at 3 p.m. The winner advances to meet No. 2 Slippery Rock on Saturday at 3 p.m.
In order to reach the NCAA tournament, the Bobcats had to solve Dominican, which entered Sunday with a 12-1 overall mark on the season. After leading 8-7 at intermission, the Penguins’ Julianne Lane scored with 13:37 left of the fourth on an assist from Morgan Newkirk to tie it at 11-11.
Three minutes later, Daniella Boss scored on an assist from Neila Haney for the go-ahead goal with 10:07 left. Boss scored again with 4:27 remaining to give Frostburg State a two-goal cushion. For her efforts, Boss was named the MEC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
In addition to Boss’ recognition, the MEC announced its All-Tournament team following the game. The honorees are listed below, followed by the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse tournament schedule.
