SALEM, Va. — The Mountain East Conference Softball Championship field was cut in half Thursday at the James I. Moyer Complex.
The top two seeded teams from each division — Glenville State and Charleston from the MEC South, and Fairmont State and West Liberty from the MEC North — will enter the penultimate day of tournament action Friday with championship hopes still alive.
Game 5 — West Liberty 4, Glenville State 1
The Hilltoppers rode the momentum of their tournament-opening walk-off home run and followed it by upending MEC South Division champion Glenville State in Thursday’s first game. West Liberty scored two runs in the second and two more in the sixth, which proved to be enough.
Kayla Mancuso and Sydney Johnson each drove in a pair of runs. Mancuso singled in the second, and Johnson doubled in the sixth to account for all of the Hilltoppers’ scoring.
Ashlyn Tapman did not allow an earned run across 5 1/3 innings, strikeout out five to earn the decision. Kadence Pettit recorded five outs without allowing a hit for the save.
Game 6 — Fairmont State 5, Charleston 1
The MEC’s 2024 Freshman of the Year, Delaney Haller, dazzled against the MEC’s 2025 Pitcher of the Year, Addison Mass, to help the Falcons to the win on Day 2. Haller pitched a complete game, allowing one run and one hit while facing 24 batters.
With the game tied 1-1 in the third, it was another award-winner — 2025 MEC Freshman of the Year Alexa Foresha — who turned the game. Foresha clubbed a based-clearing double to left-center to give Fairmont State a 4-1 lead. Bella Hess, who also scored and stole a base, singled in the sixth for an insurance run.
Mass struck out a staggering 13 batters in six innings for the Golden Eagles.
Game 7 — Davis & Elkins 2, Wheeling 1
Ashlyn Zapach singled down the line to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, and then Cortney Dobbs’ single to shortstop forced a throwing error that scored Linzey Allard and gave the Senators the lead for good.
Saylor Kneeland dazzled in the circle for Davis & Elkins, pitching a complete game and allowing one run with seven strikeouts.
Ava Kresak and KeKe Warrix each had a pair of hits for Wheeling.
Game 8 — Point Park 4, Concord 1
Melanie Taylor finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a solo home run, and Jaylyn Mullenax and Savannah Lee combined to allow one run to get the win for the Pioneers.
Taylor’s solo shot in the third gave Point Park the lead, and the Pioneers added another run on a wild pitch in the third and a single by Gia LaBrie in the sixth.
Kendall Morgan and Reghan Hintz each had a pair of hits for Concord.
Game 9 — Charleston 12, Davis & Elkins 6
The Golden Eagles’ bats came alive in the final game of Day 2. Allison Rubal finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs, Taylor Hodson was 3-for-4 with two runs, and Hannah Meyer drove in five runs in the offensive outburst.
UC fell behind 4-0 after Davis & Elkins scored two in the first and two more in the second, but then the Golden Eagles rallied. Meyer’s two-run double cut the lead in half in the second, and Rubal’s two-run double tied it in the fourth. Raegan West put UC ahead with a double to left later in the fourth, and then Meyer’s three-run home run in the fifth broke the game open.
Game 10 — Glenville State 4, Point Park 2
Glenville State rallied from a two-run deficit to survive Day 2. GSU needed an RBI triple bvy Addison Aguiniga and an RBI single by Shelby McDaniels in the fifth to tie the game. In the sixth, Hannah Howe singled to center to give Glenville State a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish. Emma McLean added an insurance run later in the sixth on an error.
Kylie Burdick recorded the win, scattering 11 hits and limiting the damage after Point Park struck early.
Melanie Taylor had two hits for Point Park, while Mia Arndt scored a run, collected an RBI and stole a base.
