KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The University of Charleston’s run in the NCAA Division II Softball Atlantic Regional came to an end Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles’ tournament journey, delayed a day because of inclement weather, received another extension when they blanked Shepherd, 1-0, Saturday in an elimination game at North Campus Field. No. 7 seed UC, on the back of a shutout by Mountain East Conference Pitcher of the Year Addison Mass, knocked out the third-seeded Rams to set up a rematch with Kutztown. On Thursday, the first day of the Atlantic Regional, Kutztown outlasted UC, 4-3, in a nine-inning game.
The teams were deadlocked again Saturday afternoon before the host Golden Bears, ranked No. 19 nationally, scored two in the top of the sixth to pull ahead 3-1, which turned out to be the final score. Kutztown’s Alexa Stevens hit a two-run homer off of Mass as part of a 3-for-3 effort.
In the opener against Shepherd, Lindsey Phares’ RBI double in the third was all the offense Mass needed. Mass struck out 10 and scattered four hits without walking a batter in the dominant performance.
UC’s season ends at 37-17.
Kutztown will need to defeat Bloomsburg twice Sunday to win the regional title.
