Glenville State's Cook Sweeps Top Honors at MEC Spring Classic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Glenville State’s Kerri-Anne Cook added to her impressive first collegiate season during Tuesday’s MEC Spring Classic, capturing Mountain East Conference Women’s Golf Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors.

The annual spring golf event, held Monday and Tuesday at Edgewood Country Club, determined the MEC’s top individual honors: Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year, and all-conference teams. The awards were determined by individual performances during five MEC-sponsored rounds of golf, three of which occurred during the fall at Cobb Course at the Resort at Glade Springs, combined with the two-day event at Edgewood.

Cook, who is from Oceana, West Virginia, built on her fall performance in this week’s 36-hole event with a 2-under-par 70 on Monday and 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday. Her five-round average was 74.8, and she finished with a five-shot advantage over University of Charleston sophomore Lucia Martin. Cook, Martin and Glenville State’s Maria Escobar all finished with a 75 on Tuesday, a round played in chilly and blustery conditions.

Cook, Martin, and Escobar received All-MEC first team recognition, along with UC’s Mari Filippa Larsen and Gabrielle Harrison, and Glenville State’s Lizze Bickar.

On top of her season-long honors, Cook was also awarded the medalist for the two-day event after finishing 1-over-par across 36 holes. She outlasted Martin, who finished +3.

Overall, Glenville State topped Charleston in the team standings this week. The Pioneers, who won the MEC Championship in the fall, rallied from a four-stroke deficit to beat UC by four shots.

UC head coach Will Johnson was named the MEC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s head coaches.

The MEC recognizes six first-teamers, six second-teamers, and six for honorable mention. All honorees are listed below.
