BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins men’s and women’s cross-country programs followed up Saturday’s Mountain East Conference championship sweep by winning this week’s MEC Male and Female Runners of the Week awards. The MEC Runners of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
The Mountain Lions’ Braden Ward was chosen as the MEC Male Runner of the Week with Concord’s Madison Cornett claiming MEC Women’s Runner of the Week honors.
Thewes, a junior from Schmelz, Germany, earned his third MEC Runner of the Week honor of the fall with a thrilling victory in Saturday’s men’s championship race at Wheeling’s Oglebay Resort, edging Charleston’s Samuel Idens at the tape by just three-tenths of a second. Thewes was voted MEC Runner of the Year by the league coaches following the race as D&E won the team title, snapping Charleston’s 6-year run of team championships.
Twyman, a junior from Vinton, Ohio, made her first collegiate victory a big one on Saturday as she won the Mountain East Conference championship race by 14 seconds over MEC Runner of the Year and MEC Freshman of the Year Cassondra O’Connor from Point Park. Twyman’s win helped Davis & Elkins run away with the team championship, ending a 4-year championship run by the University of Charleston.
