Frostburg State, Fairmont State Set For Championship Rematch

FROSTBURG, Md. – The top two seeds advanced to Saturday’s MEC Acrobatics & Tumbling Championship as No. 1 seed Frostburg State topped Glenville State and No. 2 seed Fairmont State defeated West Liberty during Friday’s semifinal round at Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Maryland.
 
The two teams met in last year’s final in Fairmont, with the Falcons coming away with a narrow 256.695-255.550 win. Fairmont State has won all three MEC Tournament Championships dating back to 2019.
 
Saturday’s Championship match is set for 3 p.m. Saturday’s action will get underway in the morning as four MEC programs will competed for individual event championships during MEC Event Finals (more information). Event finals will get underway at 11 a.m.

The Fairmont State acrobatics & tumbling turned in a strong performance in the Mountain East Conference Semifinals with a 261.910-249.925 win over three-seeded West Liberty on Friday (April 18) at Bobcat Arena in Frostburg, Md.
 
The Falcons opened the meet with winning the Compulsory event by a little more than one point (37.23-36.18). The first three routines for Fairmont State scored north of a 9.5. Chloe SmithIzaria Mcwhorter-MartinKassidy PriceBrionni DowsonRylee VinsonOlivia DanielsEmily BrockLauren Whittier and Elizabeth Maurer all completed a 9.525 in the Acro heat. The Pyramid heat penciled in a 9.675 and the Toss heat scored a 9.55 out of 10.00 possible points for the Fighting Falcons. The Tumbling heat team turned in an 8.475 and Fairmont State held the lead through one event.
 
In the Acro event, the Fighting Falcons produced a trio of routines that scored more than a 9.00. Katey Koehl, Vinson, Brock and Maurer completed the 5 Element routine with a score of 9.50 out of 10.00. Smith, Mcwhorter-Martin, Dowson, Daniels, Taylor OpenlanderReghan MollohanAlexa Wilson, Whittier and Kassidy Price fired a 9.10 in 6 Element. Sophia Del GrecoZara ChristophePeyton BarnesBrylee Knotts and Madeline Walker capped off the event with a 9.475 in the 7 Element. FSU claimed the Acro Event, 28.08-27.20. The Falcons produced a 9.50 in the Inversion Pyramid, a 9.35 in the Synchronized Pyramid and a 9.70 in the Open Pyramid. Fairmont State pushed the lead to 93.85-91.80 at the end of the first half.
 
Del Greco, Koehl, Mcwhorter-Martin, Knotts, Wilson and Barnes completed the 450 Salto routine with an 8.90 out of 9.40 start value. The synchronized toss team turned in a 9.475 out of 9.90 in heat two. Openlander, Dowson, Mollohan, Price, Barnes and Daniels fired a 9.625 out of 9.90 points to conclude the Toss event. The Falcons dominated the toss event, 28.00-25.43.
 
In tumbling, the Giavana Poyner and Del Greco submitted an 8.200 out of 9.60 in the Duo Pass. The Trio Pass team of Openlander, Koehl and Christophe scored an 8.475 out of 9.40. The quad pass etched an 8.000 out of 9.10 with Smith, Natalie Moore, Vinson and Maurer. In the solo passes, Poyner completed a 9.300 in the Aerial Pass and Openlander completed a 9.350 in the 6 Element. Koehl scored an impressive 9.575 in the Open Pass and Fairmont State topped the Hilltoppers, 52.900-49.400 in the Tumbling event. The Falcons won the Team Event with an 87.16 and secured a spot in the MEC Championship with a 261.910-249.925 semifinals win.

The Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team defeated Glenville State in their MEC Semifinal matchup on Friday night by a score of 262.720-248.465.
 
FSU got out to an early lead in the compulsory event, winning 36.60-33.85, scoring high marks in the pyramid (9.675) and toss (9.825) heats. GSU also saw their highest scores in those heats at 9.50 and 9.65, respectively.
 
The Bobcats also took the acro event by a 28.075-26.65 advantage. The 5-element (9.625) and 7-element (9.50) were Frostburg's strong points, while Glenville scored highest in the latter at 9.00.
 
In the pyramid event, FSU won 28.925-28.000 no lower than a 9.525, which was their scores in both of the first two heats, while tacking on an astounding 9.875 in the open heat. The Pioneers scored at least a 9.10 in each heat, topping out at 9.55 in the open heat.
 
Coming out of the half, Frostburg pushed their lead with a 28.025-27.275 win in the toss event, posting scores of 9.15 in both the 450 Salto and synchronized heats, then topping it off with a 9.725 in the open heat. GSU scored a high of 9.425 in the 450 Salto toss.
 
The Bobcats won yet another event in tumbling by a score of 54.075-47.850, impressing in all of the individual passes with tallies of 9.425, 9.525, and 9.725 across the Aerial, 6-Element, and Open passes, respectively. Glenville's best score was in the 6-Element pass at 8.975.
 
Holding a 12-point advantage going into the team event, FSU completed the sweep of the events, winning 87.02-84.84 for the final 262.720-248.465 victory.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-2 overall, while GSU ends their season at 5-4.
