MEC Announces Scholar-Athlete Of The Year Finalists

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- The Mountain East Conference today announced the male and female finalists for the league’s annual Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.
 
Each institution in the MEC selected one female and one male as finalists for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, which recognizes outstanding academic and athletic performance for the previous academic year. Each finalist will receive a plaque. The criteria to be nominated are: (1) a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average; (2) participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests in a MEC-sponsored sport; (3) minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
 
The female finalists are: Ashlyn McDonald (Alderson Broaddus, Volleyball), Riley Fitzwater (Concord, Basketball), Samantha Kirk (Davis & Elkins, Track & Field), Sierra Kotchman (Fairmont State, Basketball), Kat Treff (Frostburg State, Softball), Taychaun Hubbard (Glenville State, Basketball), Taylor Olson (Notre Dame, Softball), Karli Pinkerton (University of Charleston, Softball), Abbey Bauer (West Liberty, Acrobatics & Tumbling), Grace Martin (W.Va. State, Volleyball), Lauren Baumgartner (W.Va. Wesleyan, Soccer), Danielle Stewart (Wheeling, Track & Field).

The male finalists are: Taylor Cook (Alderson Broaddus, Baseball), Anthony Stehlin (Concord, Baseball), Craig Cook (Davis & Elkins, Wrestling), Dylan Culpen (Frostburg State, Football), Joao Martins (Fairmont State, Tennis), Hegel Augustin (Glenville State, Basketball), Kelan McKenna (Notre Dame, Wrestling), Jack Mastandrea (University of Charleston, Track & Field), Dalton Bolon (West Liberty, Basketball), Ethan Lauchart (W.Va. State, Baseball), John Merica (W.Va. Wesleyan, Football), Luis Dominguez (Wheeling, Baseball).
 
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year is determined by a vote of the administrators in the Mountain East Conference and the league office. The winners will be announced later this month.

Additionally, the MEC will also be announcing several of its annual awards over the coming weeks, including Male Sports Coach of the Year, Female Sports Coach of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year.
