In 2018-19, the Mountain East Conference began its "Dear Sport" initiative where student-athletes in the conference were encouraged to write a letter to their sport. The initiative provides the opportunity for student-athletes to express in their own words the impact that sports has played in shaping them throughout their lives.

Below is a letter from Phil Bledsoe, a basketball player from Glenville State.
Dear Basketball,
I thank you.
You’re my best friend. We’ve been best friends since my father introduced you to me at the age of four. You’re my go-to in times of need. Even on my worst days, I can always count on you to cheer me up. Basketball, you are always there for me 24/7. I can always run to your arena in times of need. I thank you.
You’re my teacher. You’ve taught me hard work, dedication, and perseverance. These are three great attributes that carry over into other aspects of my life. These qualities will help make me successful off of the hardwood. There is nothing that will not be able to overcome in life because of the concepts you have taught me. I thank you.
You’re my guide. You have provided a lane for me in this massive race of people chasing their dreams. You keep me in my lane and free of distractions. You’ve been guiding me in the right direction my whole life. I thank you.
Basketball, you are such a blessing in my life. When I have cloudy days, you are the sunshine that reassures me everything will be fine. You have given me the keys to be successful in anything that I wish to do in life. You have made a path for me to chase my dreams and you’re keeping me on it.
And even though one day I know the ball will stop bouncing, you will still continue to be my best friend, my teacher, and my guide.
I thank you.
Love,
Phillip Bledsoe
