BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan took home the top awards in the Mountain East Conference for the 2018 softball season. WVWC's Madison Casto was tabbed as the league's Player of the Year, Hannah Vet was named Pitcher of the Year for the third time in her career, Lauryn King was selected as the Freshman of the Year and Steve Warner earned Coach of the Year honors.
Casto, a junior second baseman from Hurricane, W.Va., is the MEC Player of the Year after pacing the Bobcat offense with a .440 batting average, which ranks second in the league. She had 62 hits this year and scored 47 runs and was 14-of-16 on stolen bases. She was stellar in the field as well registering 108 assists with a .947 fielding percentage at second.
Vet, a senior from Naples, Fla., earns MEC Pitcher of the Year honors for the third time in her career after going 24-5 with a 1.04 ERA for the Bobcats. Vet's 24 wins are fifth-most in the country, while her ERA is 10th. She's posted nine shutouts this year (11th-best in the country), and has only allowed 13 walks in 175.2 innings pitched. Her 0.52 walks per seven innings is third in the NCAA.
King, an outfielder from Chester, Va., hit .406 with 11 home runs and 18 doubles in her first season with the Bobcats. She led the league in runs scored with 53, RBI with 52 and home runs (11), and ranked among the league leaders in batting average, slugging (.742), on-base percentage (.448) and doubles (18).
Warner is the MEC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in five seasons after leading the Bobcats to a 37-10 record and a second-straight South Division title. WVWC is ranked 23rd in the country in the NFCA poll and moved to No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.
In addition to the award winners, the MEC also announced its all-conference teams. The all-conference teams and individual awards are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
