MEC Announces Men's Soccer Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston, the 2014 Mountain East Conference regular season champions and the No. 1 team in the country, claimed top individual honors and placed seven on the All-MEC first team, the league announced on Wednesday. Augusto Maciel was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year, Conor Branson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, Will Roberts was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year and Chris Grassie was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Maciel, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, led the MEC with 15 goals and 11 assists for 41 points on the year. He is ranked sixth in the country in goals, assists and points. He had a goal or an assist in all but two games this year and provided the Golden Eagles with four game-winning tallies.

Branson, a junior from Ponterfract, England, controlled the center of the field for UC in both the midfield and as a center back. He helped UC allow a league-low nine goals on the year while also stepping forward and scoring eight goals and five assists.

Roberts, a freshman from Denbigh, Wales, found the back of the net 14 times for the Golden Eagles and added four assists. Roberts is second among all freshmen in the country with 14 goals.

Grassie has directed Charleston to a 16-0-1 overall record and 11-0-1 mark in MEC play. The Golden Eagles have been nationally ranked all season and earned the school's first No. 1 ranking in any sport on Oct. 28 in the NSCAA poll. UC is the top seed in this week's MEC Tournament and is also ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings.

Joining the seven players from UC on the first team were two from Notre Dame, and one each from Shepherd, Urbana, West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit.

The All-MEC teams are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
