BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Wheeling’s Caleb Murray has been named the MEC Men’s player of the Week while Fairmont State’s Gabby Reep and Wheeling’s Kenzie Dalton have been named the MEC Women’s Co-Players of the Week.
Murray, a senior guard from Beallsville, Ohio, led the Cardinals to a 2-0 week. He finished with 38 points across the week while shooting 18-33 (54.5%) from the floor and 4-10 (40%) from three-point range. He would start the week off strong, tying his career-best with 30 points in the team's 103-72 win over the Bobcats. It was his most efficient effort from the floor, seeing him go 11-19 (57.8%) from the floor while hitting 6-11 (54.5%) from three-point range. He would supplement that with an 18-point effort against Davis & Elkins that saw him continue his efficiency, hitting seven of 14 shots from the floor.
Reep, a junior guard from Bridgeport, West Virginia, helped the Fighting Falcons go 2-0 this week with wins over Charleston and West Virginia State. She averaged 19.50 ppg, 4.5 apg, 4.0 rpg, and 2.5 spg. In the 76-64 win over Charleston, she scored 27 points, six assist, three steals, and five rebounds. She followed that up with 12 points, three assists, two steals, and three rebounds in a 69-55 win over West Virginia State.
Dalton, a senior guard from Marietta, Ohio, led the Cardinals in a pair of overtime efforts that saw the team go 1-1 against West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. The senior finished with 54 points across two games, while adding 13 rebounds, eight assists, and eight steals. In the win over Davis & Elkins, Dalton would pick up a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 10-15 from the charity stripe. In the overtime loss to West Virginia Wesleyan, Dalton continued to score, putting up 26 points, while leading the defense with five steals. It was her most efficient game from the floor, making nine of her 17 shots for a 52.9 shooting percentage.
