Bridgeport, W.Va. - The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Glenville State’s Ashlyn Riley and West Virginia State’s Baylee Goins share the MEC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award, while Fairmont State’s CJ Meredith was named the MEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Riley, a sophomore guard from Shinnston, West Virginia., averaged 20.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 1.0 spg with a 63 percent three-point mark in the Lady Pioneers two victories over Davis & Elkins and West Virginia Wesleyan. In GSU's 88-63 win at D&E, Riley scored 16 points and grabbed five boards on 6-for-7 field goal shooting and 3-for-4 from three-point range. She backed that performance up with a big 25-point performance versus WVWC in a battle for first place. She shot 11-for-15 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
Goins, a senior guard from Nitro, West Virginia, delivered a standout week to lead West Virginia State to a pair of road and home victories. She averaged 22.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.5 apg and 2.0 spg while playing a key role on both ends of the floor. In a hard-fought 51–47 road win at Salem on Wednesday, Goins contributed 10 points, two rebounds, two assists and three steals, helping the Yellow Jackets grind out a defensive battle away from home. She followed with a dominant offensive performance in a 78–67 victory over Point Park on Saturday, pouring in a career-high 35 points on 12-of-26 shooting, including seven three-pointers and four free throws, while adding eight rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Her scoring outburst ranks as the fifth-highest single-game scoring performance in program history and her seven made three-pointers are the seventh-most in a single game at West Virginia State.
Meredith, a graduate senior guard from Huntington, West Virginia, averaged 20.5 ppg, 2.0 apg, and 4.5 rpg in two victories over Wheeling and West Liberty. In the Falcons 74-71 win over Wheeling, he scored 17 points going 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-7 from deep. He also had three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. In the 99-89 win over #13 West Liberty, he scored a game-high 24 points, pulled down six rebounds, and had an assist. Against the Hilltoppers he went 6-of12 from the floor and 5-of-11 from behind the three-point line.
