BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Mountain East Conference announced Monday the winners of this week’s Football Player of the Week awards. The MEC Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.
Frostburg State’s Owen Doyle is the MEC Offensive Player of the Week. Doyle, a running back, carried the ball 22 times for 117 yards and three touchdowns in the Bobcats’ 29-24 win against West Virginia State. He scored twice in the fourth quarter, both putting first-place Frostburg State in the lead, and the second one being the game-winner.
Wheeling’s Leonard Sherrod III and Frostburg State’s Marquise Allsup share the MEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Sherrod recorded a season-high 10 tackles and intercepted his fifth pass of the season, setting a school record. Allsup also recorded an interception, thwarting West Virginia State’s trip into the red zone and returning it 74 yards to set up the Bobcats’ first touchdown of the game.
Connor Fitzpatrick won his second MEC Special Teams Player of the Week award after a banner day kicking the ball for Wheeling. He made all five of his field goal attempts, booted six kickoffs for a total of 355 yards, and kicked the game-winning 23-yard field goal as time expired to give the Cardinals a 38-35 win against Glenville State.
