LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The University of Charleston men’s cross country team repeated as the 2023 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Champions on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles finished 1-2-3 in the final individual results with George Couttie in first, Zane Chalker in second, and Matthys Bourse in third.
Couttie turned in a time of 30:10.5 in the 10k race to win the individual regional championship.
Davis & Elkins finished second in the team standings, matching Charleston’s team total of 54 points on the team leaderboard. Charleston won the head-to-head tiebreaker to take home the regional championship.
The Senators were led in the race by Jan Thewes in fourth place and Jackson Gibson in ninth place.
Shippensburg finished third on the team leaderboard with 63 points. UC, Davis & Elkins and Shippensburg have punched their tickets to the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championships.
Joining the teams at the national championships will be individual qualifiers Joey Cintavey from Slippery Rock and Logan Zuchelli from Concord. They finished seventh and eighth respectively in the race.
Eleven runners from the MEC claimed All-Region accolades on Saturday, including four from Charleston (Couttie, Chalker, Bourse, Corey Schobelock) and five from Davis & Elkins (Thewes, Gibson, Thijs Terlouw, Carter McKenna and Gabe Conder). Zuchelli and West Liberty’s Philip White also garnered All-Region accolades.
