Charleston Wins 2023 MEC Football Championship

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The University of Charleston wrapped up its first Mountain East Conference Football Championship with a 52-20 road victory over West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Charleston improved to 9-1 on the season, including 8-1 in MEC play.

In Saturday's victory, the Charleston offense was led by quarterback Javonte Howard, completing 17 of 26 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Howard's top target in the game was Tae Marrero with seven catches for 76 yards. Marquan Herron also hauled in a 47-yard touchdown reception for the Golden Eagles.

On the ground, Chavon Wright finsihed the afternoon with 99 yards on 16 carries and also scored a touchdown. Josh Brown added 67 yards and a rushing touchdown, while Alex Brink carried the ball nine times for 66 yards.

Charleston outgained West Virginia State 404-277 in the victory.

Defensively, Charleston recorded three interceptions, including a 30-yard pick-six from Roderick Webb. Andrew Chamblee also had a big day for the UC defense with seven tackles and a 30-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

With Charleston atop the final league standing at 8-1 (9-1 overall), four teams finished in a tie for second place in 2023, including Fairmont State (8-3, 6-3), Frostburg State (7-3, 6-3), Notre Dame College (7-3, 6-3) and UNC Pembroke (7-3, 6-3). On Saturday, Frostburg State defeated Fairmont State 50-20 at Duvall-Rosier Field, while UNC Pembroke rolled to a season-ending victory over Concord at home. Notre Dame wrapped up its season in week 10 with a victory at Concord, 24-14.
