WHEREAS, the NCAA Board of Governors considered the increasing health crisis in the United States due to COVID-19.
WHEREAS, the NCAA Board of Governors noted the escalating medical information about COVID-19 and the potential for widespread infection.
WHEREAS, many NCAA members have made decisions to cancel or suspend all sports programs to protect the health and safety of their campus communities.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the NCAA Board of Governors encourages conferences and institutions to make decisions and take action in the best interest of their student-athletes and communities. In addition, the NCAA Board of Governors directs Divisions I, II and III to enact modifications, changes, or waivers to legislation and rules where appropriate to provide necessary relief due to regulations and policies impacted by COVID-19.
• NCAA Cancels Winter/Spring Championships - Mar. 12, 4:07 p.m. (Link)
Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.
• Statement from the NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel on NCAA events - Mar. 11, 4:15 p.m. : LINK
"The NCAA COVID-19 Advisory Panel recognizes the fluidity of COVID-19 and its impact on hosting events in a public space. COVID-19 is spreading rapidly in the United States, and behavioral risk mitigation strategies are the best option for slowing the spread of this disease. This is especially important because mildly symptomatic individuals can transmit COVID-19. Given these considerations, coupled with a more unfavorable outcome of COVID-19 in older adults – especially those with underlying chronic medical conditions – we recommend against sporting events open to the public. We do believe sport events can take place with only essential personnel and limited family attendance, and this protects our players, employees, and fans."
• Statement from MEC Commissioner Reid Amos - Mar. 11, 2020 - 10:00 a.m.
"The Mountain East Conference continues to monitor this situation very closely and intends to follow the recommendations of the COVID-19 Advisory Panel and the NCAA's Sports Science Institute. An exception to this approach could occur if a localized outbreak were to develop that might have a more direct impact on any of our MEC campuses. If the six renowned medical doctors that lead the NCAA's COVID-19 Advisory Panel continue to state that collegiate sporting events can be staged, it will remain our intention to continue MEC competition while imploring all to continue utilizing the panel's recommended risk mitigation approach while we continue to work with local and state authorities."
• NCAA Press Release - Mar. 10, 2020 - 1:13 p.m.
"The NCAA continues to assess how COVID-19 impacts the conduct of our tournaments and events. We are consulting with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel, who are leading experts in epidemiology and public health, and will make decisions in the coming days."
• Statement from NCAA President Mark Emmert - Mar. 10, 2020 - 1:13 p.m.
NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play. As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.
• Summary from the COVID-19 Advisory Panel - Mar. 6, 3:14 p.m.
The NCAA's COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Advisory Panel (working in conjunction with the NCAA's Sports Science Institute) at present
has not recommended canceling athletic events and advocates a risk mitigation approach. Such an approach is being carried out in conjunction with local and state health authorities. The Advisory Panel further endorses "practicing standard precautions as being the most trusted and reliable ways to help prevent the spread of airborne infectious diseases."
