CLARION, Pa. -- Thirty two players from the Mountain East Conference earned All-Super 1 Region honors from the Don Hansen Sports Gazette, including eight first team selections. Additionally, Notre Dame's Jaleel McLaughlin was named the region's Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, and NDC head coach was tabbed as the region's Coach of the Year. Fairmont State's Lyrics Klugh was selected as the Super Region 1 Specialist of the Year.
McLaughlin, a freshman running back at Notre Dame, led the MEC conference and ranked #1 in NCAA Division II with 2,421 yards (in 14 Games) with 18 rushing td’s, 378 carries and a 6.4 yard per carry average. He also ranked second in the nation averaging 172.9 yards per game, leading Notre Dame to a 13-1 overall record, the Super Region 1 title and a Final Four appearance. McLaughlin ran for 302 yards and 2 td’s in his collegiate opener against Shepherd and a season high 340 yards and 3 td’s against West Liberty.
Klugh, a senior, defensive back at Fairmont State, was a dynamic kickoff and punt returner for the Falcons in 2018. He returned 19 punts for 542 yards and 3 td’s (28.5 yards per punt return) and also posted a 25.4 yard average kickoff return getting 534 yards on 21 tries. He led all of NCAA Division II in punt return average (28.5), and in td’s with 3. He had an 81 yard td return versus West Liberty, a 69 yarder against Urbana and a 68 yard return versus W.V. Wesleyan.
Jacobs, in only his third year at the helm of the Notre Dame football program, earned MEC “Coach of the Year” honors in 2018 leading the Falcons to a perfect 10-0 record in the MEC, and then posting a 2-1 NCAA Playoff record on its way to an NCAA semifinal finish and a 13-1 season record. In the NCAA Playoffs Notre Dame defeated Hillsdale (19-14) and Slippery Rock (21-17) before dropping a close 30-24 decision at Valdosta State. His freshman running back Jaleel McLaughlin led the nation in rushing and finished third in the Harlon Hill voting as the top player in Division II.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s FB Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2018 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named later this month.
