BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan running back Michael Anderson and Fairmont State defensive end Quincy Redmon have earned the top two individual honors in the Mountain East Conference as the league announced its awards and all-conference teams. Additionally, FSU's Laurence King was tabbed as the league's Offensive Freshman of the Year, while West Liberty's Logan Deri was selected as the Defensive Freshman of the Year. Shepherd head coach Monte Cater was named MEC Coach of the Year for the third time in four years.
Anderson, a senior from Elkridge, Md., is the MEC Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,417 yards and 12 touchdowns. Anderson led the league and was sixth in the country in rushing yards, and also scored 12 touchdowns for the Bobcats. He had seven 100-yard rushing games on the year, including a league-best 236 against Concord in September. He also led WVWC in receptions this year with 40 and had 299 receiving yards and two TDs.
Redmon, a junior from Keyser, W.Va., is the MEC Defensive Player of the Year after leading a resurgent Falcons defense in 2016. Redmon led the league with 12 sacks (10 solo), and was fourth in the league with 15 tackles for a loss. FSU held teams to just 95.5 yards rushing and just 15.1 points per game.
King, a freshman from Greenbelt, Md., is the Offensive Freshman of the Year after averaging 138.2 all-purpose yards per game. King set a Fairmont State single season record for receptions with 81, a total that led the MEC, for 869 yards and five touchdowns. He also led the league in kick return average with 32.3 with a pair of touchdowns. He was named to the All-MEC first team as a return specialist and second team as a wideout.
Deri, a freshman from North Huntingdon, Pa., is the Defensive Freshman of the Year after recording five interceptions from his safety spot for the Hilltoppers. The five interceptions ranked second in the league and was tied for second-most in the country among freshmen. He was third on the team with 68 tackles.
Cater directed Shepherd to its sixth undefeated regular season and its third Mountain East Conference championship in four years. The Rams are one of just seven undefeated teams in NCAA Division II and are back in the NCAA Playoffs for the third time as the No. 3 seed in Super Region 1.
In addition to the individual awards, the league also announced the All-MEC teams. Shepherd, the regular season champions, led all schools with 9 first team All-MEC selections (four offense, five defense). Fairmont State, the MEC runner-up and NCAA Playoff participant, had six selections (one offense, four defense and one special teams), as did Notre Dame (five offense, one defense).
The all-conference teams and individual award winners are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
