UVa-Wise Claims 2018 MEC Women's Lacrosse Championship

WISE, Va. –
UVa-Wise and Shepherd battled through three overtime periods before Hannah Marshall’s game-winning goal secured the 12-11 win for the Cavaliers in Sunday’s MEC Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
 
Shepherd struck first in the contest and scored three of the last four goals in the first half to knot the score 6-6 at the end of the first half.  With the game tied midway through the second half, the Rams used back-to-back goals from Lillian Funke and Sidney Kelly to take an 11-9 lead with 7:12 left in regulation.  UVa-Wise responded with goals from Marshall and Kristin Gobbi to force overtime. 
 
Melanie Reilly made 13 saves for the Cavaliers over the course of the contest while Casey Hickman recorded 13 for the Rams. 
 
Funke paced Shepherd with four goals, four caused turnovers, and five draw controls in the setback.  Sidney Kelley added three goals for the Rams in the loss.  Elishia Davis scored twice with Sarah Wendt and Megan Dusci each adding a score. 
 
Marshall scored four times for the Cavaliers, including the game-winner.  She also had five caused turnovers, four draw controls, and two ground balls in the win. Rachel Cole and Gobbi each added two goals for UVa-Wise with Syndey Steinberg, Jessica Apgar, McKayla Grasham, and Riley Fenster each finding the back of the net over the course of the contest.
