MEC Announces Men's Golf Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- West Liberty's Mike Rogers headlines the 2017-18 Mountain East Conference Men's Golf honors as the league's Player of the Year. Concord's Brett Laxton is the Freshman of the Year, while Charleston's Will Johnson was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.

Rogers, a native of Follansbee, W.Va., led all players in select MEC events with a scoring average of 75. He was one of only two players that broke 70 at the MEC Championship where he earned medalist honors.

In addition to Rogers, West Liberty placed Sean Trapp on the first team. Charleston had two first team honorees in Ritwik Jain and Lewis Fenn. Owen Elliott represents Shepherd on the first team with West Virginia Wesleyan's Nick West also earning the nod.

Laxton led all freshman with a 77.33 scoring average to take home first team and Freshman of the Year honors. His season was highlighted by a tie for first at the MEC Championship last fall where he eventually lost in a three-hole playoff against Rogers.

Brandon Dang (Shepherd), Eric Dargis (Wheeling Jesuit), Cory Hosher (West Liberty), Nicholas Casingal (West Virginia Wesleyan), and Alex Hamrick (Concord) earned MEC second team recognition.

Charleston's Mason Weese and Justin Westveer earned honorable mention along with West Liberty's Caleb Moore and Joey Cilone. Bryce Varner (UVa-Wise), Jared Porter (Concord), Bailey Mohr (Fairmont State), and Mike Graessle (Shepherd) round out the MEC honorable mention honorees.

In addition to having four players earn All-MEC honors, Charleston head coach Will Johnson guided the team to three victories in the fall including the MEC Championship, and one more already this spring as the Golden Eagles won the MEC Spring Classic. UC also held the top spot in last week's NCAA Regional Rankings.

The All-MEC teams, along with Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, are determined by scoring average from six rounds at select MEC events. The MEC Coach of the Year is determined by a vote of the league's coaches.
