CANTON, Ohio --
West Virginia Wesleyan's Dominik Schopper, Fairmont State's Alex Quintao and Marlena Dudek were individual winners on Saturday night, and the FSU men's 400 free relay team took the title to highlight the final day of the 2018 Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.
Additionally, Fairmont State's Courtney Deem was named the Women's Swimmer of the Meet for her efforts on the week. Deem was a winner in the 1,000 free, 500 free and 200 free, and finished second in the 100 free.
Fairmont State finished fourth in the team standings with a score of 820.50 points, just a half a point ahead of West Virginia Wesleyan in fifth. By virtue of their finish, the Fighting Falcons claimed the MEC Women's Swimming championship.
The Bobcats won the MEC title on the men's side finishing third overall in the meet with 1,165.50 points. Fairmont State was fourth with 862 points.
Schopper stayed in front for nearly the entire way in his swim in the 200 breaststroke to win with a time of 2:06.53. Teammate Jeff McNeil finished seventh in the event with a time of 2:12.50.
Quintao and WVWC's Arthur Assfeld went 1-2 in the 100 free with Quintao posting a time of 45.95 and Assfeld finishing with a time of 46.54. NDC's Seth Knights took sixth in the event as well.
Arthur Brilhante took third int he 200 back (1:57.31), while Shaw Gee finished seventh (2:00.08) and Urbana's Dakota Lewis-Griggs was eighth (2:02.19).
WVWC's Mikel Mugarza added a fifth-place finish in the 1,650 free (16:46.24), and Notre Dame's Joshua Grzincic was seventh (17:39.96), and WVWC's Dan Williams was eighth (17:43.46).
Dudek qualified fourth after prelims in the 200 breaststroke, but came back strong in the finals to win the event by nearly three seconds with a time of 2:16.91. WVWC's Kay Lange (2:26.11) was fifth and FSU's Emily Gersper was seventh (2:28.95).
Deem was second on Saturday in the 100 free with a time of 52.34, and teammate Fran Meyer was fourth in the event witha time of 52.85. FSU's Becka Crandall was the top finisher from the MEC in the 1,650 free with a time of 19:09.66.
