Mercyhurst Takes First Round Lead

-- Mercyhurst shot a first round of 298 to take the first round lead at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Men's Golf Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs on Monday.

The Lakers were paced by Chris Kupniewski's 69, which tied for the lowest score of the day with Hunter Westcott of Dominican. Mercyhurst's Les Lancaster shot 73, and Harison Laskey and Adrian Larsen each carded 78s to take the lead.

Westcott's performance helped Dominican land in second after 18 holes, just two shots back of Mercyhurst with a team score of 300. St. Thomas Aquinas is in third (301), followed by California (302), Le Moyne (304), Wilmington (304) and Shepherd (305). Twelve teams are within 12 shots of the lead with still 36 holes left to play. 

In addition to Kupniewski and Westcott, two other players shot under par on the first day in St. Thomas Aquinas' Kevin Gately (71) and Alex Patricio of California (71). 

Play continues on the Cobb Course tomorrow morning with the first tee time scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
