BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan took home its fourth-straight women’s track and field championships on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats scored 312.5 points to take first, followed closely by Wheeling Jesuit in second with 248.5 points. Glenville State finished third with 79 points, just ahead of Concord with 78. Charleston was fifth (59), followed by Notre Dame (29) and West Liberty (11).
WVWC’s Lauren Cvechko was the Most Valuable Performer at the meet for the second-straight year. She won the 110-meter hurdles, the long jump and high jump. She scored points in the shot put and javelin.
Wheeling Jesuit’s Kelsey Chambers was voted as the MEC Track Athlete of the Year. She was victorious in the 5,000 meters and 1,500 meters on Sunday. Teammate Hayley Campbell was selected as the Field Athlete of the Year after winning the hammer and shot put and finishing second in the discus. WJU’s Anna Massa was also recognized as the league’s Freshman of the Year. Massa, who is nationally ranked in the pole vault, won that event and the heptathlon this weekend.
West Virginia Wesleyan’s Jesse Skiles was selected as the MEC Coach of the Year.
Other winners in Sunday’s finals were WJU’s Natasha Trott, who doubled in the 100 and 200 meters. Concord’s Emilee Henry won the 400 meters, and teammate Taylor Hamm won the 800. WVWC’s Lauren Leaman won the 400 meter hurdles.
In the relays, Glenville State came from behind in the last leg to win the 4x100. Concord won the 4x400.
