SALEM, Va. – Hannah Vet pitched a four-hit shutout to lead West Virginia Wesleyan to a 1-0 win over West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
The win gave WVWC head coach Steve Warner his 1,000th career win and also kept the Bobcats alive in the tournament. West Virginia Wesleyan (51-9) will play Minnesota State on Saturday evening.
“Yesterday was a very emotional day, but the kids came out today and did the same thing they normally do, they didn’t change a thing,” said WVWC head coach Steve Warner. “I talked to Hannah before the game and I asked her if she could get it done, and she said, ‘Yes sir.’ And so here we are – we have an opportunity to keep playing.”
West Florida concludes its season at 46-15.
Sarah Scoone brought home the only run in the game after getting hit by a pitch in the fifth inning with the bases loaded. It was the only breakthrough for the Bobcats who stranded 11 runners in the game.
The single run was all Vet (28-4) would need as she gave up just four hits and struck out five with one walk in seven innings. Scoone, Brooklyn Waddell and Tori Pogue each had a hit and a walk for WVWC.
UWF’s Sarah Maloney also tossed a four-hitter and allowed just the single unearned run in the game. Rhiannon Sassman had two of the four hits for the Argonauts, and Tiona Hill added a hit and a walk.
“You have to put runs on the board,” UWF head coach Melissa Paul said. “I don’t think we had good enough at-bats. I thought Sarah Maloney pitched well enough to win. I thought we played good defense and Sarah pitched well, things just didn’t go our way.”
