SALEM, Va. – Madison Williams tossed a no-hitter to lead Humboldt State to a 2-0 win over Molloy on Friday night at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
The Lumberjacks (44-14) advance to take on Armstrong State tomorrow. Molloy ends its season with a record of 37-18.
Wiliams (25-10) struck out 10 and only walked two in the game. Despite allowing the lead runner on base in four of the seven innings, Williams never allowed a runner to reach second base.
“It’s great when you have a pitcher who goes out there and does her thing,” said head coach Shelli Sarchett. “I don’t expect no-hitters, but I expect her to go out there and give us a game and that’s shat she did today.”
“I was going with what was working,” Williams said. “I saw from the beginning how they were on some pitches and not on others, so I was just trying to mix it up a little bit. The defense behind me was tremendous and they made a lot of plays for me.”
Humboldt State took advantage of a Molloy error in the third to score the first run of the game. Winona Vigil reached on an error, and then stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Sydney Roberts. The Lumberjacks doubled their lead in the fourth on a solo home run from Breonna Bejaran. Bejaran finished the game 3-for-3.
Molloy starter Chelsea Hawks put a solid performance in the circle for the Lions giving up two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.
“I thought Chelsea pitched a great game and kept us in it,” said head coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke. “She gave up just the two runs
“I told the team before the game that no matter what happened I didn’t want this one game to signify our season,” said head coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke. “We had a good run and hopefully the girls feel a little bit of pain, and that the pain will make them want to get back here.”
