BUCKHANNON, W.Va.- West Virginia Wesleyan used Shannon Shawgo's second half goal to claim the 2017 Mountain East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament title. After splitting a pair of contests in the regular season, the Bobcats had the last word on Sunday after securing the crown.
Shawgo headed the ball far post using Natalie Prater's feed in the 77th minute. The late score proved to be all the Bobcats would need.
The Falcons took control of the momentum in the first half, registering 10 shots and five corner kicks in comparison to three shots and one corner by the Bobcats.
West Virginia Wesleyan (17-2-1) responded in the second half with Haelly Ramirez firing a shot from point-blank range shortly after the halftime break. The Bobcats continued to apply pressure, outshooting the Falcons 6-3 in the final 45 minutes of play.
Kyra McDowell recorded three saves in goal for Notre Dame (13-4-2). Ashlee Schumacher and Chelsea Hubner combined for three saves in the shutout win for West Virginia Wesleyan.
West Virginia Wesleyan will now prepare for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and will await Monday's Tournament Selection Show for seeding and location of their next outing. Notre Dame also appeared in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region ranking used to determine the tournament field.
