CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan knocked off top-seeded and No. 1 Charleston, 2-1, in overtime to win the 2017 Mountain East Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

The Bobcats (12-5-3) earned their first MEC Tournament title and ended Charleston's string of four-straight tournament championships. West Virginia Wesleyan also earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Matthew Bentley scored his second goal of the tournament to give WVWC an early 1-0 lead. Juwon Akintunde worked on the left side of the box where he found Bentley who held off a defender to get the shot off and get the score.

The score remained the same for most of the way in large part due to the play of WVWC keeper Alessandro Armenia. Armenia stopped a point-blank shot early in the first half on David Achaerandio, and added several more in the second half. He made a diving saves off of Willams N'Dah header and Armando Tikvic late in the second half to keep WVWC's lead at 1-0.

The Golden Eagles (16-1-1) finally broke through, in the 87th minute off a corner from Tikvic to Robin Lapert who got it past Armenia to send the game in overtime.

WVWC was able to regain momentum in the overtime period and finally got the golden goal as Kazuma Takagi slipped through the back line, and with the UC keeper scrambling, laid it off to Bentley who put the ball away for his brace and the game-winner.

Armenia finished with six saves in the game to help lead WVWC. UC managed 11 corners in the game and out-shot the Bobcats 11-6.

Charleston will await its postseason fate tomorrow during the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Selection Show.
