MEC Announces Football Awards

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Shepherd's Connor Jessop and Myles Humphrey earned the top two individual honors in the Mountain East Conference as the league announced its awards and all-conference teams. Additionally, West Virginia State's Calil Wilkins was named Offensive Freshman of the Year, while Glenville State's Cory Roberts was selected as the Defensive Freshman of the Year. Shepherd head coach Monte Cater was named MEC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in five years.

Jessop, a senior from Ashburn, Va., is the MEC Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 3,284 yards and an MEC record 38 touchdowns. Jessop connected on 65 percent of his passes and was intercepted just seven times in 357 attempts. He threw for at least three touchdowns in every game this season, and also added 334 yards rushing and six more touchdowns. He leads the country in points accounted for (270), and is second in the NCAA in passing touchdowns and passing yards per game (328.4). He was the MEC Offensive Player of the Week on four occasions this season directing an offense that averaged 48.5 points per game, the second-best average in the NCAA.

Humphrey, a senior defensive end from Upper Marlboro, Md., is the MEC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Rams on defense. Humphrey led the league with 11 solo sacks and finished with 11.5 on the season and became the school's career leader in that category this season. He also led the league forcing four fumbles and was fourth in the league in tackles for a loss with 18.0.

Wilkins, a freshman from Temple Hills, Md., is the Offensive Freshman of the Year after helping the Yellow Jackets to their first winning season since 2008. His 819 rushing yards was fourth in the MEC and were fourth-most among all freshmen in NCAA Division II. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry and had five touchdowns. Wilkins also caught 19 passes for 141 yards and two more scores.

Roberts, a freshman from Pensacola, Fla., is the MEC Defensive Freshman of the Year after leading Glenville State in tackles in his first season for the Pioneers. Roberts was fourth in the league in tackles (99) and tackles per game (9.9), and was fourth among all freshmen in NCAA Division II in total tackles. He intercepted a pass and had two sacks.

Cater led Shepherd to a third-straight undefeated regular season (seventh overall) and fourth Mountain East Conference championship. The Rams ascended to No. 2 in the AFCA poll, their highest ranking in school history. Shepherd is in the NCAA Playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years and are the second seed in Super Region 1.

In addition to the individual awards, the league also announced the All-MEC teams. Shepherd, the regular season champions, led all schools with 10 first team All-MEC selections (six offense, four defense). Notre Dame and Fairmont State each had five first team honorees. West Virginia State had four players placed on the first team, while Charleston, Concord and Urbana each had three. West Liberty had two players earn first team honors and West Virginia Wesleyan had one.

The all-conference teams and individual award winners are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
