BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Notre Dame's Alexis Manoa, Concord's Sarah Hill, and West Virginia Wesleyan's Mary Cooper and coach Patrick Holguin have earned top honors from the Mountain East Conference as the league announced its annual women's soccer awards and all-conference teams.
Manoa, a senior from Strongsville, Ohio, is the league's Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in her career after winning the honor as a freshman in 2014. The three-time first team All-MEC selection tied for the league lead in goals (8) and assists (6) and paced the conference's highest scoring team. Her 21 points and 1.29 points per game led all players in the league.
Cooper, a senior from McKeesport, Pa., was named the MEC's Defensive Player of the Year after leading one of the nation's top defensive units. A center back, Cooper helped the Bobcats record 13 shutouts in 18 games while allowing just seven goals in 18 games. WVWC is ranked fourth in the country in shutout percentage (.722) and fifth in goals-against average (0.384).
Hill, a native of Somerset, England, is the conference's Freshman of the Year for her role in helping to lead Concord to the postseason. As a freshman, Hill led the league in shots per game (3.07) and tied for the league lead in goals per game (0.47). Her seven goals were second in the MEC this year, and she finished the year with 15 points, which ranks fifth in the conference.
Holguin was named MEC Coach of the Year after leading West Virginia Wesleyan to the 2017 MEC regular season title. The Bobcats finished the regular season 15-2-1, including a 14-2-0 record and 42 points in conference play to finish first. WVWC has been nationally ranked for the majority of the season, reaching as high as No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. He was also recognized as the MEC Coach of the Year in 2015.
In addition to the individual honors, the league also announced the All-MEC teams. West Virginia Wesleyan and Notre Dame each had four first team selections, while Concord had three. Shepherd and Charleston were also represented on the first team.
The All-MEC teams are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.
