DANIELS, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston held off a final round charge from West Liberty to win the 2017 Mountain East Conference Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Glade Springs Resort.
The Golden Eagles led by nine shots heading into the final round, but West Liberty got to within one shot on several occassions in the final nine holes. Charleston was able to hold on and posted a team total of 293 on the final day for a three-day total of 886. WLU shot a tournament-best 287 (-1) on the final 18 holes and finished three shots back for a score of 890.
West Virginia Wesleyan was third (903), Concord tied for fourth with a score of 928, and Urbana was sixth with a score of 953.
After shooting a final round 67 (-5), Michael Rogers forced a playoff for medalist honors with Concord's Brett Laxton. The pair finished with a tournament record 217 (+1). The playoff went to the third hole where Rogers hit his approach to five feet and two-putted for the victory.
UC's Ritwik Jain finished two shots back at 219 to finish third. West Liberty's Joey Cilone was fourth at 220, and Charleston's Lewis Fenn and Shepherd's Owen Elliott were fifth with a total of 221.
The Golden Eagles receive the league's automatic berth to the 2018 NCAA Atlantic/East Regional Tournament which will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference at Glade Springs Resort in the spring.
