#3 Fairmont State 3, #6 Notre Dame 0 | Final Stats
WHEELING, W.Va. – Fairmont State won a tough second set to propel it to a 3-0 win over Notre Dame on Thursday in the first round of the MEC Tournament.
FSU (20-12) won the first set 25-16, but then the teams had a lengthy battle in set two. Fairmont State fought off five set points en route to a 32-30 win over NDC. Fairmont State never trailed in set three in a 25-17 victory.
Mackenzie Harrison hit 19 kills and 11 digs to lead FSU. Jessica Furda had 37 assists and 10 digs. Megan Clerico contributed 10 digs.
Melissa Maczuzak had 10 kills for NDC (16-18). Mary Kate McHugh had eight kills and 10 digs.
#2 Charleston 3, #7 Concord 0 | Final Stats
WHEELING, W.Va. – Charleston handled Concord, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon in the MEC Quarterfinals.
The Golden Eagles won by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-16.
Carly Granger had 14 kills and just one error in the match to lead UC (25-12). Shiann White added 13 kills. Claire Lambert had 20 assists and Chloe Massaro had 22 and helped UC hit .435 in the victory.
Brooke Heck led Concord (17-16) with 10 kills. Casey Mandeville had 17 assists and Erin Shannon had 11 digs.
#5 West Liberty 3, #4 Urbana 2 | Final Stats
WHEELING, W.Va. -- West Liberty outlasted Urbana, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11), in a thrilling five set match in the MEC Quarterfinals.
The Hilltoppers (23-13) had a 2-1 edge in sets and led 14-8 in the fourth set, but the Blue Knights (22-14) battled back scoring nine of the next 11 points to take the lead. Urbana used the momentum to close the set out, 25-20, to force a fifth and final set.
In a closely contested set that saw five ties, Urbana pulled ahead 11-9. This time it was the Hilltoppers that mounted the rally by scoring seven-straight points and taking the match.
West Liberty featured a balanced attack led by Raimey Benson and Caitlin Clarke with 10 kills apiece. Amanda Leonard added nine kills, 16 assists and 10 digs. Stephanie Leonard had eight kills, nine blocks and five digs. Kailee Cunningham led the 'Toppers with 19 digs.
Urbana was paced by a game-high 27 kills from Mikaela Beck, who also added 15 digs. Katlynn Dunlap had 11 kills and 23 digs, and Madison Davis added 12 kills. Alyssa Myers had 49 assists in the match.
#1 Wheeling Jesuit 3, UVa-Wise 0 | Final Stats
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit rolled to a 3-0 win over UVa-Wise in the MEC Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday evening.
The Cards rolled in three sets, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-15.
Bre Kramer and Lauran Graves each contributed 12 kills, and Kramer added nine digs to lead Wheeling Jesuit (36-2). Haley Kindall had seven kills, and Sydney Obringer had five. Andrea Thobe had 36 assists as the Cards hit .461 in the match. Kayce Krucki had 14 digs.
Karley Allen had 12 kills to lead UVa-Wise (10-24). Morgan Milligan had 17 assists.
