BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Wheeling Jesuit won its first-ever Mountain East Conference title in women's cross country after placing its first four runners in the top five on Saturday morning at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
The Cardinals finished with 24 points taking first, second, fourth, fiifth and 12th in the race. Kelsey Chambers took the individual championship by finishing the 6,000-meter race in 23:26. She was also voted as the MEC Runner of the Year. Kaitlyn Workman was runner-up, followed by Lindsay Scheffel in fourth and Fallon Doyle in fifth. For her efforts in 2016, Scheffel was voted as the league's Freshman of the Year. Jenna Furr rounded out the scoring for WJU by finishing 12th.
West Virginia Wesleyan was second with 35 points. The Bobcats had all five runners in the top 10 led by Sydney Pineault in third. Baylee Summers (sixth), Joanna Johnston (seventh), Emma Harrison (ninth) and Rachael Englund (10th) also earned first team All-MEC honors.
Concord was third with 79 points. Fairmont State was fourth with 114 points, followed by Charleston (154), Notre Dame (184), West Liberty (189), Glenville State (202), UVa-Wise (232) and West Virginia State (278).
WJU head coach Ricky Moore was voted as the league's Coach of the Year after directing the Cardinals to its first MEC championship.
