Day 2: MEC Baseball Tournament Recap

Game 4: West Virginia State 7, West Virginia Wesleyan | Box Score

West Virginia State's Tyler Thompson pitched a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 7-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Epling Stadium.

WVSU will now take on Notre Dame tomorrow at 3 p.m. in an elimination game. WVWC was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

Thompson faced three over the minimum striking out nine and walking one. The Yellow Jackets (31-14) had eight different players tally hits in the game, led by two apiece from Jamison Jones, Anthony Payne and Jordan Simpson. 

WVWC (19-20) had two hits from Logan Moneypenny. Riley Metz (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season lasting just 2.1 innings giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks. James Gainer pitched three innings allowing one run on three hits in relief before giving way to Chris Metrick (no runs in 2.2 innings) and Austin Boam (no runs in one inning).

Game 5: Shepherd 8, West Liberty 4 | Box Score
Shepherd built a four-run lead early on and then played four runs in the top of the ninth as the Rams eliminated West Liberty, 8-4, on Friday afternoon.

Shepherd advances to take on Concord at 11 a.m. in the winner's bracket.

MEC Player of the Year Matt Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI for Shepherd (38-10). Jonathan Sarty also went 3-for-5, including a triple, with an RBI and a run scored. Bryce Shemer added a three-run home run to help power the Rams. 

Jamie Driver (9-2) gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win.

Anthony Pierro, Tim Mirandy, Jose Jared Carranza each had two hits for West Liberty (28-21). Greg Stagani (4-5) allowed four runs on seven its in six innings of work.

Game 6: Concord 6, Notre Dame 2 | Box Score
Zach Kelly scattered eight hits and allowed two runs (one earned) in nine innings of work to pitch Concord past Notre Dame, 6-2, on Friday night. 

Concord (30-20) will take on top-seeded Shepherd tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. Notre Dame (25-18) will play West Virginia State at 3 p.m. in an elimination game.

Kelly improved to 7-3 on the year striking out four and walking four in the complete game. Andrew Seigel and Paul Williams each went 3-for-4 to help pace the Mountain Lion offense. 

Josh Armbruster (3-4) took the loss going seven innings allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Danny Beaver and Shane DeFranco each contributed two hits for the Falcons.
